You can really check out the effects of drafting with the real time fuel economy display on the EDU (or whatever fancy acronym the new cars have). It definitely shows the difference with drafting, but you do have to get quite close for a major impact. If you get right behind a big truck you're practically driving for free, though obviously that's not a good idea to do for too long.
I remember a Car & Driver article when a manufacturer of an early hybrid, maybe the Honda Insight, had a challenge for writers of different magazines to see who could get the best economy on a certain route. After 'clarification' on the rules, the C&D team drove the whole route about a foot behind their camera crew's Suburban with the barn doors propped open and I think doubled the economy of the next best teams.
