Thanks - I did check out Swedespeed, and there's some good stuff there (although I was hoping for a comparative Saab perspective here). Volvo strikes me as making bigger cars with less precise handling (although still precise by US standards) and a softer ride than Saab.
It's hard to gauge the relative reliability of the car from Swedespeed - for reasons that are familiar to inhabitants of the 9-5 board. Any bulletin board is going to collect far more complaints than "no problems here" reports. I would think after two years Volvo would have most of the bugs worked out by now.
As far as the V-8, yes it's very exciting but I'm not sure it's a good value. The 2.5T engine moves the XC90 along pretty well - and the V-8 is going to add about $10k to the sticker price. If it was my car, I might spring for the big engine (in the unlikely event I want to drive an SUV as a daily driver).
The third row seat option in the XC90 is a big cross-selling point against the competition. Plus a car built to Swedish safety expectations.
Why not the 9-7X? All my wife had to hear was "TrailBlazer platform" and it was off the list.
