My daughter's 1998 VW New Beetle met an untimely demise a few weeks ago, so we have been car shopping. She didn't want another Beetle, mainly because there's no VW dealer in town, and she's not in a position to take a car to an out of town dealer for service. That also ruled out a 9-2x, which I really wanted her to look at. We considered a Subaru Forester (a little expensive and plain, but seemingly well built and reliable), a Mazda6 (looked like a great car for the money, but also too expensive for us), and a used Audi A4 (long term service concerns here). She didn't like the Saturn Ion, Ford Focus, Scion, Mazda3,or Chevy Cobalt.
She settled on a 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser convertible. We found a base 5 speed model in Fargo, and we bought it on Saturday and drove it home. The sticker was $19995, and we got $1300 off, plus $2500 in rebates, or just $16,195 before taxes. It's a real cute car, and certainly distinctive, at least around here. It gets decent mileage (22/29 on regular), is plenty peppy (with the stick shift), and it rides and drives very well for such an inexpensive car. Plenty of room for four people and a small, but usable trunk. I hope it holds up in the long run (it is a Chrysler), but from what I have read, PT Cruisers tend to be pretty well liked by their owners. It's her first non-German car (two Audi's and two VW's, though the New Beetle was built in Mexico, as was the PT). All stick shifts, bless her heart!
John.
