The H6 is a good engine with no known issues (though I haven't followed them the last few years). And the last info I had it still has a normal transmission (better for towing). Had a '05. A bit thirsty though. I'd suggest you get on Outback.org to see what goes on. I like Subaru's enough that I'd lease a new one and it was the only other car I considered. But long term I'd get a Honda or Toyota product. People get 200K plus out of them all the time, but the question is what it takes to get there.
