Thanks everyone, yes newer Hondas do look quite nice, plus the fact they actually make a manual hatchback meets most of my criteria :-) However, looking at the used market, a 2004 Civic with about 200K on the clock costs right at my $ target, and from what I read the auto trans in Hondas of this age may be a big weak point. I really need to encourage (and patiently support) my daughter to be more comfortable with a manual! :-)
Realistically, I would strongly lean toward a manual 9-3 if possible, I do a lot of my own work. But I'll also keep an eye out for other things that may be overlooked by others. But really would I want to get into an unknown make of car with 150-200K on the auto transmission? Not really (but I also know auto trans 900s and 9000s were a big weak point .... not sure if they got better with 9-3 / 9-5?)
