I had 2 1971 Westfalia poptops in college, and boy they were fun. Also, had a 1968 Deluxe Bus. The '71's were the last with the Type 1 (bug) motor, so the 1980 you are considering will be a rocket in comparison. I had the obligatory 0-50 sticker that THS mentions too. Too funny!
The air-cooled bus/vanagons are very straightforward and easy to work on. Any of the models by this point will need work occasionally, but the motors pull out the back on a trolley floor jack, and you don't even have to jack up the vehicle to pull the motor.
Get the Idiot's guide by Muir as it references Type 2 and 4 motors, and a Bentley manual (I still hate the fact that one doesn't exist for either of my current Saabs, are you listening Bentley?). Also, check thesamba.com for more info.
I saw a mint 1966 Bug on the way to work yesterday, and got all nostalgic!
Hope this helps,
Don
