Volvo 240: Clutch Job Estimate Posted by iveand [Email] (#3155) [Profile/Gallery] (more from iveand) on Wed, 23 May 2007 18:19:56 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Well, I have been out of the Saab world for almost a year, but still am not totally satisfied with the quality of the Volvo BB's. Brickboard is pretty good, but it isn't Saabnet!
I have a 1991 240 Wagon 5 speed, and am staring at a clutch job. Even properly adjusted (even over tightened for testing purposes), the clutch cable is not fully disengaging the clutch. I am guessing I either have a warped pressure plate or a bad bearing (pilot?). If I am in neutral, with the clutch in it is very hard to engage first gear. If I want to go to reverse, I have to go to 1 then 2 then QUICKLY to R, or else it will grind. Even if everything is stopped and I then take it out of gear and try to re-engage a gear (without ever letting out the clutch), it will grind again. So, the transmission is starting to spin even though the clutch is supposedly disengaged the whole time.
Once I am moving, I have no problem with gears, assumedly because the gears mesh up once they are in motion.
Here are my questions: I know it is "relatively" easy because it is RWD, but what are we talking about? A full day if everything goes well? I would need to borrow a transmission jack somewhere. And even then, I am up against a timing deadline, as we are moving in the next 6 weeks and I need to get the house ready, etc.
What $$ am I looking at to have an independent shop do it for me? I hope they would have no problem with me supplying parts from eEuro, as they are probably cheaper than if they supply them.
Should I just suck it up and pay the $$, or could I be fairly confident that a day or two and I could have it all done myself? I am not too afraid of the job (I have the Bentley), but the risks of not having an additional pair of hands and of being up against the clock speak against me.
Any input is welcomed (Anders?)
Thanks,
iveand
