The new factory unit has to be mated to the car after installation using the factory program VIDA and the car hooked up through that to Volvo HQ via internet.
With that you need to purchase and download a software package to make the stereo "talk" to the cars network again.
Only Volvo dealers and well equipped Volvo independents would have that VIDA system since it is quite expensive to subscribe to.
I and only one other Volvo independent in our area have it.
This is the same protocol as to when replacing many other electronic parts on the newer Volvo's from about 99 and up. Power window switches, ACC panel, rear view mirror to name a few of the many things that is needed to be added using a special software.
