I don't think you can generalize on that level. Every manufacturer has its strengths and weaknesses, whether it's American, Japanese, or European. Personally, I can't think of any engine from any brand available in America that I'd totally shy away from right now.
Furthermore, seriously, what are engine problems these days? Nothing. The cost of wholesale engine replacement vs. hunting electrical gremlins is inconsequential. Should be really exciting when new luxury cars make it to the used-car market. I can't wait til we see used prices on i-Drive equipped BMWs and such. :P
