So after pounding my beater 85 spg with miles all winter long, I've decided it's finally time to pay it some respect. It was only a 500 dollar car, and the planned mods will probably cost me just about that much, but what? I'll be in it for a grand and loving every second of it, no big deal.
Since I bought the car already tweaked, it's been tons of fun. As far as I know all that were done was the bypassed boost cutout switch, wastegate cranked up a few turns, timing retarded, 3.0 BAR FPR, bigger IC pipes, and all sorts of other mickey moused stuff here and there. The car easily runs 1.5 BAR (about 22 PSI) right upto 3300 rpms, then falls to 1.0 BAR (15 PSI) until I decide to shift. I'm assuming the boost is falling at 3300 rpms due to lack of fuel with the stock injectrs, I could be wrong? I was warned about running a poorly tuned engine with this much boost, and was even scared for awhile that I would manage to blow it up. But no such thing. I put about 14,000 miles on the car since purchasing it in november, and all I've done is put in new plugs and changed the oil regularly, oh and the metric autometer boost guage (hence the BAR boost readouts). This car must just be a runner considering it's upto 269,000 miles.
So finally, to give it a bit more oomph I figure I'll adress the injector issue by going for a set of the 24# blue tops. Was thinking about 30's, but those seem like a bit of overkill since I'm not going for a seriously tuned car here, I'm just looking for it to hold boost a bit past the full duty cycle of the stock injectors. Also, I plan on doing a complete 3" exhaust. I've got a 3" dp on the way, though not the "true" one that has the crazy huge bend off the turbo where you need to relocated the battery. This is just the one that bolts to the factory elbow, not as good as the previously mentioned, but should still get the job done.
So with 24# injectors and the 3 inch exhaust, I'm hoping the car will give me another 14,000 miles and maybe with even better performance.
Just thought I would share... this is my first dabble really into turbo upgrading since I've always been a strict S guy until I picked up this car as a winter crasher. But now I am no also a turbo guy :-)
