Synthetic Oil Change Interval

I have a 99 Viggen and the owners manual calls for oil changes at 10,000! I've opted to do them every 5,000 with Mobil One (would prefer Amsoil, but hate to pay the shipping). Still, not sure 5000 is frequent enough--was brought up by a "every 3 months or 3000 miles" father. Any thoughts? One other oil change question. Does anyone know how the Saab filter stacks up against the other good ones out there (Mobil 1, Pure One). Thanks, Mike
