Sounds like a relatively minor plug issue for sure. As John said, check the gap. NGK BCP7EV or equivalent is the plug to use, IIRC NGK went to a new numbering system. If you've opened up the gap, tighten it down back to stock. That said, one should be able to open the gap up a tad if the motor's and everything else is strong.
I had issues with the hall sensor wiring before too, but it wasn't consistently at 3-4000rpm, it was all over the place and inconsistent. Turned out the wiring right at the connector was getting old and the wire sheathing had cracked apart. Messed things up quite a bit. No distributor = no more crap like that happening! ;)
