I was under the impression sludge was caused by water and engine blowby products not being heated enough to escape the oil by evaporating out the crankcase venting system. A hazard when the car is driven only short trips in cold weather.
I agree that spool-down was an issue with older turbos overheating. Water cooled bearings solved it.
