The square area is about the same as the diameter of the tube. Eliminating the bends and all the transitions would improve the flow for sure. But, I always try to remember that there is a turbo compressor to force air, and it is going to overcome much of the inlet flow loss. I wonder why Saab didn't put the inlet over by where the battery is, put the battery on the other side where there is not intense heat. I bet there were some late night arguments about that during the winter months in Trollhattan.
