The 323 was replaced by the 325 around 2000. The 328 was replaced by the 330 at the same time. Interestingly, the 323 was actually a 2.5 liter engine but the speculation is that BMW didn't want to have the lower end car siphon sales from the 328 as there is quite a price difference.
