Yes and no.
They are not legal in every state. You can get a ticket just for having one. They are definitely not looked upon kindly by officers if you were to get pulled over, even in legal states. That being said, hell yeah they work! I have one in every car I own. My Saab, of course, has the best. I can't recall manufacturer or model number offhand but it cost me about $300. It has saved me countless times and has paid for itself many times over. I'm what you might call an "aggressive driver". I have no points (or have ever had) on my licence. I'm in my 40s.
My best detector reads about every band imaginable and will also read front and rear and indirect signals. It also reads laser which is rediculous because laser is a direct hit. If it goes off on laser (lights up like a Christmas tree by the way) all it's telling you is that you are screwed. Reducing your speed after a laser hit is not an avoidance, just a courtesy. :-)
My 16-y-o son just got his licence. He bought himself a 1992 Saab 900T coupe. It just cost him $350 to clear up his first speeding ticket--92 in a 55 (he was actually going 125 trying to see if he could top out his speedo when a trooper passed him going the other way--idiot). Needless to say, he doesn't have a detector. I wouldn't let him have one because I didn't want to give him an OK to speed. I guess that didn't work. >:-|
