Thanks for weighing in John. I have enjoyed reading your posts for several months. You have a great car and I love that you share my love for flogging it down the 1320.

Corrections: It's a FORD Mustang not a "For" Mustang and also, my torque figure for the 5.0 was off. It actually doesn't make it's peak torque until 3200 RPMs which means it has an even narrower band than I gave it credit for. It also means that at 2100 RPMs, where the 900 is making peak torque stock, the Mustang is obviously making less than 300 because that is 1100 RPMs below it's peak. If I had to guess, I'd say it's making between 225 and 250 FT LBS. Call it 250. It would take 215 or so just to match the 900 at 2100 RPMs on a torque to weight ratio. Now obviously, between 2100 and 4200 the Mustang is making bucketloads more torque...stock but then again, most 900s that are out there racing Mustangs aren't stock and of course, there are probably not 10 5.0 Mustangs in North America that are still stock. That comparison will be on another episode of "As the wheel turns." Be sure to join us as we look at how some basic modifications can affect the outcome. :-)

Also, don't forget that rear drive cars lose, on average, another 5% in drivetrain losses over most FWD cars. I would say that the average manual trans Saab has been proven to put down around 90% of it's crank HP where most rear drivers are around 82-85%. It's power TO THE GROUND that moves a vehicle.

Honestly, when I do a race with a friend and we really want to know who has built the faster car, we run from a 5-10MPH roll. This takes SOME of the driver skill out of the equation but allows a measurement of engine elasticity which is a VERY real factor. A 10MPH rolling start where you just drop the hammer and run it through the gears really tells the story of "area under the curve" and THAT is what interests me. Not dyno queens, not lots of theory, not even good ETs (although they are fun!) On the street and on a road course, it's area under the curve baby...somebody stop me...I can't...stop...writing...//...//...

Well, you guys have heard more than enough from me so...

Godspeed and may all of your Saabing dreams come true!

D-
