It is definitely possible that a small are could form a crack and leak air, and be detectable, but from the extra heat Jak said he used (weld much more brittle), and without annealing the weld (which I did not ask Jak if he had done), and with a continuous weld like that, I am worried that once a crack starts it will just run the entire circumference of the wheel since the wheels are fairly highly stressed and fly apart. Which I doubt would happen when the car was parked.
As mentioned, the gussets would provide periodic places for the crack to stop before it got all the way around the wheel. Drilling through the weld bead and then putting the patch gussets over the holes would be even better, provided the holes were a large enough radius, and were chamfered so as not to make any sharp corners that could start their own cracks. Placing the diamond gussets at 45* to the weld bead would load the welds on the gusset in shear, and would provide greatly increased weld length vs joint length.
I am definitely not attacking or anything, just pointing out my worries.
