Cark,
The 1985 - 1989 Garrett T3 turbochargers were of the same type (except for water cooled housings introduced in 1988) and should be very capable of supporting 225-230 BHP while still maintaining some efficiency. If your current BHP target is under 230, you should be able to use your current turbocharger. When seeking additional BHP, use of the OEM turbocharger would increase charging temperatures and make for a less dense induction (cooler air is more dense). In this case, a turbocharger upgrade could be very helpful and provide a cooler/more efficient air volume.
If smoke is your only issue, use of the 360 degree oil seal may be an inexpensive option and this would eliminate oil bypassing past the turbine oil seal. If suspecting the need for a replacement, you could easily overhaul your current T3 turbocharger or opt for a cartridge replacement which would be a substantial savings over a complete T3 assembly.
Best Regards,
GaryK at SWEDISH DYNAMICS,INC.
