I have a 1991 900T with several modifications from Swedish Dynamics including hot cams and the red turbo. I also have a 6BTM with an MSD high energy coil.
The Problem:
At around 23+psi, the power cuts out intermittently. It feels similar to the fuel cut, just not as violent. The boost can spike up to about 28psi in low gears. After that the boost will settle down to a range of 17-23psi. Above 23psi is when the power shuts down intermittently. The spark plugs are the stock type and gapped to factory specifications. I switched from the MSD blaster coil to the MSD Blaster HVC II Coil (a recommendation from MSD) in an attempt to fix the problem. This helped slightly but did not fix it. When I told MSD the boost I was running, they told me that the 6BTM was not designed to ignite that high of a boosted charge and that I need to switch to the 7AL plus ignition. I tried narrowing the gap down to about .018 but it had no effect. I also tried widening the gap to .042 (AS A TEST). This made the power cut out at about 21psi. If at all possible, I want to retain the 6BTM.
I do not know if this is a fueling problem or an ignition problem.
My narrow band A/F ratio gage reads rich up until the power cuts out. After that it will sweep off the gage in the lean direction. I do not know if it sweeps off because it is extremely lean or because it has nothing to read because there is no ignition.
My two thoughts:
Maybe the fuel pump cant keep up OR the ignition can't ignite that dense of a charge.
My mods:
S.D. K & N Cone air filter.
Magnecore Ignition Wires
MSD 6BTM Ignition
MSD HVC II Coil
S.D. Red Series Camshafts
SD Blow Off Valve
S.D. APC
3Bar Fuel Regulator
S.D. Red Fuel Injectors
S.D. Fuel chip
Magnaflow muffler back custom exhaust (I think its 2.75in)
S.D. Red Turbo
I have my timing set at 10 degrees BTDC at max boost and 20 degrees at idle. The BTM is used for the entire timing curve (the stock timing pot is defeated).
Thanks for your help!
