pgh,
The 1984 900 employed the T3 Garrett turbocharger with a small 45 compressor trim. The introduction of the 16V engine in 1985 pushed SAAB to increase compressor trim to 55. Many of our 8V customers find a T3 Garrett after 1985 or fit the 1990-1993 900 Mitsubishi TE05 turbocharger which would directly mount into the 1984 900 with installation of coolant lines. Upgrading to a larger turbocharger would provide better efficiency (cooler charge) if the horsepower was increased on the 8V engine but an upgrade by itself would not render much in engine BHP. If leaving as stock, A 135 horsepower 8V B201 engine would still be a 135 BHP engine with a turbocharger upgrade. Areas such as exhaust, intake, APC, camshaft, etc. would increase engine BHP which would also put more demand on the small 8V T3 turbocharger. This will bring lower charge efficiency (heat which makes for less air volume/mass) wheel and a turbocharger upgrade would be more feasible at this stage.
Best of luck and regards,
GSK at SWEDISH DYNAMICS,INC.
