Steven,
The GARRETT T3 turbocharger uses piston ring type oil seals that can wear prematurely if seeing high temperatures or lack of lubrication. The maximum gap on the T3 turbine seal is at .013" when new and this will open over time/use allowing for more oil bypassing (causing smoke in exhaust). A replacement is possible but you might consider a new version seal that is gapless. These are only about $25 but you may want to take a look at other causes of exhaust smoke before servicing the turbocharger.
Pos. crank case pressure can easily cause turbocharger oil bypassing and this is created by blocked crank case vent (on valve cover), etc.
Also check for any restrictions to oil return from the turbocharger such as a dented return pipe, overfilled sump, etc.
Best of luck and regards,
Gary K at SWEDISH DYNAMICS,INC.
