Typically you can tell them apart by the transition to the pipe. A muffler will be a uniform cylinder that suddenly reduces to the pipe size. A resonator will funnel down gradually to reduce to the pipe size. The overall size of a resonator is usually smaller, but it's relative so unless you're looking at them side by side it's hard to go by that. If you're not sure, it's most likely a muffler, resonators are not all that common.
