Hello Performance folks,
I have essentially got my '85 SPG to solid running condition in stock tune.
I'd like to start thinking about what it might take to build what I would consider the ultimate street 900. High power output is of no interest to me, though I'd like to be producing around the 185BHP of the '93 CEs when I'm done.
What I am interested in is a flat torque curve from as low down as is mechanically possible to about 4000 or 4500rpm, perhaps even 5000. I'm not too concerned with solid pull all the way to redline, as long as things are consistent to upper mid revs. I'd like to reduce turbo lag as much as possible, and increase low rpm off-boost power if I can.
I'm open to swapping pretty much anything. I expect a bigger exhaust with nice downpipe would be helpful, perhaps even equal-length headers. 2.5" enough or should I go for 3"?
I expect head and intake work would help -- port polishing, three-angle valve grind, that sort of thing. I have a 2.3 head sitting around and could get a 2.1 intake manifold, though I am concerned those items will reduce the compression ratio, getting me further from my goal.
I understand the head/block arragnement on '85 is unique. I know the '85 exhaust cam is a coveted item but is that for high-rpm, high-boost applications, or is it good for what I'm looking for? Also I believe the pistons are shorter, and that the combustion chambres are shallower to make up the difference? Perhaps later, taller pistons and a lot of nice work on the '85 head to get the flow up would increase the compression ratio and produce a favourable result for me?
I'm aimable to swapping in Trionic 5, and am a stickler for things likely to be improved by upgrading from LH 2.2, such as smoother, more consistent idle as well as power delivery, and smooth off/on throttle transitions.
I have a TE05 and appropriate accessories (including an intake manifold with the port for the water lines as the '85 doesn't have it, as well as the water lines themselves, not to mention wastegate assembly) ready to swap in as that's gotta be less laggy than the T3...
Unrelated to power, I intend on doing an axle swap to '88/up, including proper hand brake relocation and centering the rear axle to eliminate rubbing with 16" Aeros. Will upgrade to 9000 brakes as well. Would like to lower to at least later SPG height, but don't want it to look too slammed.
I think that basically covers what I'm looking for... how's all this sound? I'd appreciate any feedback and suggestions on my dream setup!
Cheers,
--jeff
