Just got back from the Ultimate Driving Experience offered by BMW. This is different than the Drive For The Cure that some of you may be familiar with.

The Ultimate Driving Experience is a free auto-cross put on by BMW. They provide professional instruction beginning with approximately 1 hour of classroom time where they teach the basics that most of you guys already know (what is understeer, oversteer, etc).

Following that, they run each person through the course to get a handle on the vehicle dynamics including emergency braking, braking in a turn and walk you through the course turn by turn. Each person then gets a few laps behind the wheel and a lot of laps as passenger. An instructor is in the car at all times providing helpful advice, especially for someone who hasn't done it before.

Finally, they break into two teams and have a tag-team autocross challenge, with each person doing 1 lap.

The vehicles provided are 330xi's (all-wheel drive), 530i's and X5 3.0's. There are no age restrictions - just need a valid license. All in all, the event takes about 2.5 hours.

This is a great event, especially considering it's free! I'd highly recommend that anyone go. It looks as though there may just be two more cities left for this season but maybe there's more. Call 1-800-956-4BMW to register. I noticed today that some people were showing up on standby and participated also so that may be an option. The 330xi's are the first to fill up, followed by the 530i and finally the X5 which doesn't appear to be popular for this event.

Also, the should have the Drive For The Cure cars there as well. You can definitely just show up and drive some of the other cars on the road with no sales pitch. BMW will donate $1/1 mile driving to the Susan G Komen Breast Cancel Research Fund. For this event, they've got convertibles, 3's, 5's, 7's and Z3's cars (sorry - no Z8, M5 or M3).

They've got me thinking I want to take the 9-5 out autocrossing! The cones didn't appear to do much damage to their vehicles so it might be worth me checking out. It was great fun.

I hope I didn't offend anyone with the non-saab content but this seemed appropriate for the performance board...
