The main reason to run E85 is you can run boost and timing like you're on race gas without paying race gas prices. It has less energy than standard gas so more volume of fuel is needed for a given amount of air. The extra volume creates a cooling effect that reduces knock, not to mention the higher octane.
If you're comparing fuel economy you'd have to compare the lower price of E85 vs. the lower miles/gallon you get. Like.. if E85 is 15% cheaper than 93 octane but you get 15% less MPGs.. you're not doing too bad. There's a "E85 cost per mile" calculator on the right side of the linked webpage.
I'll let others debate the impacts of E85 on the economy and environment, etc. I'll tune my car based on what tq/hp I get for the money from each gas.. and what gas I can buy locally.:)
