My thought with the Falcon - and I think this applies to the MG - is that I'm not too worried about go-fast bits. The Falcon weighs 2500lbs with its 600lb inline six, so as long as I find something that has more than 100hp and weighs less than 600lbs, I'm making an improvement. I figure 150-170 naturally-aspirated horsepower would be very satisfactory in the car, and if I can make that power while shaving 300lbs it should be a pretty dramatic improvement. I'm sure the MG in in a similar boat, though surely with less engine weight to lose.
I think the Saab motor's only real flaw is a lack of go-fast parts, but considering you have options everywhere from 130hp (2.0l NA) to a very achievable 300hp (2.3l turbo) I don't think it's going to be found wanting in either of these cars. I think the big things working against them are going to be packaging (they are physically large for their displacement) and sub-optimal weight, on account of the iron block.
The Duratec is VERY small and VERY light for its displacement and output, which is plus. Since they're in a huge variety of cars (Focus, Ranger, Fusion, Mazda3, Miata) they are pretty readily available and not terribly expensive, even new.
I think the thing pulling me towards the Saab motor is that there are piles of engine management options, everything from CIS to Trionic. Compared to the Duratec - which is very new and very complicated - using OTS Saab ebgine management seems very appealing. Of course Megasquirt et al is always an option, but there is something to be said for keeping with factory stuff when tuning isn't a factor... a motor that just starts when you turn the key and already runs great under all environmental conditions is a nice thing. ;)
