Is it possible you didn't get the crank in the right position before performing the test? 38% loss is a HUGE loss, even 20% is reasonably undesirable. I can't imagine losses of 21-38% on a healthy Saab motor, or any motor without losing performance and economy, and on a boosted motor all that leakage would end up in the crankcase or valve cover all the time. I would expect it to make a mess. Maybe double check that test? Maybe recruit someone to help do the listening as well? (Hissing air in a modern motor is tough to track down!)
