Viggen stock tires are 215/45-17. This is about 1.6% bigger than the stock tire.
215/40-17 is 1.8% smaller. I would recommend against this; you want as much sidewall as you can get away with to A) prevent bent rims and B) have a "liveable" ride quality.
If I recall correctly, the Gary Fisher is actually a 8" wheel, right? This may mean that you'll want 225/40 tires to match. In fact, 225/40-17 is just 0.5% too big, your closest match. You should see if you can find some satisfied customers on this board with that tire size. I don't know about rubbing issues; my experience with 17" wheels/tires is limited to 3-spoke Aero wheels and 215/45-17 tires. My only caution about going wider is that it will increase "torque" steer effects.
BTW, if you want to show the guy at the tire store, take a piece of string and scissors with you. Have him take down a 195/60-15 and a 225/40-17. Wrap the string around the outside of the 15" tire and cut it off where the ends meet. Then wrap the string around the 17" tire and watch the look on his face when he sees that the two tires are exactly the same size.
