With 17" wheels, there will be no way around rim scrapes other than being very, very careful. Obviously, you don't use automatic car washes (bad idea anyway, I've seen them eat too many exterior parts in my day -- I recently watched one remove the rear wiper arm on a beautiful black 9-3 SE). You have to get really, really good at parallel parking if you need to do that sort of thing.
On my 9-3, I had 9-5 Aero three spokes (17x7)with 215/45. The tires had perfectly square shoulders (ie no bulge). (I sleep better now not having to worry about things like that.)
I am lead to believe that if you put 215/45 on an 8" wheel, it either won't work right or you'll really be exposing those rims to constant abuse. 225/45 will more likely fit (according to Abbott), but will still provide little protection. 235 would be pushing it a little, but it has been done. I have heard of 245 working with some modifications. Do also remember that the wider the tire, the "squirmier" they will get. I saw a significant increase in rut steer with the addition of the 215's to my 9-3. If I were you, I might re-think the wheels as a whole. You might be best off finding something a bit narrower if you enjoy your peace of mind.
