I live on LI, and this story has been all over the local news. Terrible. Drag racing in a straight line even on a secluded road is dangerous enough, but these guys were weaving in and out of traffic on busy streets. Crazy!! Counties (or towns, states, whatever) should build more drag strips where people can come and do this kind of stuff. People are always gonna have the desire to do this stuff.

The Volvo in question was an S80. Looks like this was an offset crash, which probably explains why the passengers of both the Volvo and the Lambo survived while the drivers were killed.

I must say though, that here on LI it seems as if the cops have really been cracking down lately (prior to this tragedy). Anyone in the area know about Deer Park Avenue?? Its a locally famous (infamous) cruise and drag strip, has been since the 60s, only now imports rule the scene (still see groups of muscle car guys). People from California even know about it. Drive down Deer Park Ave between 11pm and 3 am, and the streets are dominated by racers. Every parking lot is full of them, and with every green light you can here the cars taking off. Me and my friend sometimes cruise it, but just to see what is happening. A few months ago, we noticed cops everywhere. People were getting pulled over left and right. In one parking lot there were about 10 police cars and they were searching everyone's cars. Later that night, we came to some traffic..seems the cops were checking everyone out...we got checked, but of course, we were allowed to pass. Ever since then, there has been maybe a cop or two out making some stops here and there and there is almost no racing to speak of. It will be interesting to see if the racers creep back once the police presence fades.
