So, when you want to advance the timing, you go higher than 16 degrees, if you want to retard, go below 16 degrees (relative to stock, of course. If you think about the stock number, recall that it is 16 degrees BTDC, or, before top dead center. That is, the spark plug will fire when the piston is 16 degrees before top dead center, er well maybe not the piston, but the crank.
So, to advance the timing means to make the spark sooner, meaning you need more degrees BTDC. Retarding the timing naturally would be the opposite..
By using the MSD BTM or SPG9 AID, you want the timing set at 18 degrees BTDC, possibly as much as 20-22 degrees, depending on your other mods.
