I dont know for sure but I see two reasons for using the current location:

1. Mounting it as high as possible will make sure dirt and other unwanted stuff does not end up in the valve simply by the laws of gravity.

2. Standing wave theory applied to this specific application may result in lenghts close to what we se know. Shorter pipes may not be possible?

Just my two cents...
