I just bought a 1990 SAAB 900 SPG Turbo on Monday, and I'm one happy clam. My previous car was an '84 900S, so this is my first turbo. It's valves are noisy (clicking) but other than that it seems to run great (what do you all think about clicking valves?)
My first question is: how often is normal for the turbo needle to drift into the red? I've begun to get the impression that this is a Bad Thing, but I know mine will do this without too much effort on my part. Does it mean my APC is bad or needs to be adjusted?
My next question is, planning for the future: what should I tweak first? I'm no auto-pro, but I do have many generic tools (full set of sockets, no special meters or anything beyond a standard DMM) and consider myself to be passibly mechanical. I live an hour from a 100% SAAB dealership, and about 4 hours from Swedish Dynamics in CT. I'm not going to race this vehicle, but my goals are to replace anything that just should be replaced for longevity's sake (vacuum hoses with silicone ones? Turbo bypass valve?) and anything that gives you a LOT of bang for your buck without being too difficult to install (Air intake? APC?). I'm certainly not against a little extra HP, but I'll admit I probably don't need it. ;)
Anyhow, I welcome your thoughts.
