open air filters and water susceptibility

I know from first hand experience- after plowing directly into a few feet of water in an olds 88- that water and air filters don't mix- atleast not without leaving you stranded on the side of the highway in a torrential rain storm and then eventually sleeping in your car at a nearby gas station.
I just installed a K&N cone filter in my 9000. I completely removed the stock airbox. I added a 3 or 4 inch exhaust coupler to extend the stock setup enough to have the filter sit completely in the cold fender area. I took a giant hose clamp and clamped the whole intake to the pipe below so it can't bounce around. I am also going to take some of that sticky foam pipe insulation and cover the remainer of the opening into the fender to seal out heat. The problem of wetness will still persist though. Luckily, rain is not forecast until at least the weekend, so I have a couple days to reduce the water permeability of my fender. Currently, water can get in through the headlight, or splash up from the bottom. I do have the plastic moulding on the bottom in place, but it is far from water tight- a really good puddle and I know I could get a gulp in that way. The space between the headlight would be more like a persistant leak, slowly soaking the filter.
I'm running through ideas in my mind about how to tighten it up in there. I'm thinking of some strategically placed duck tape, or maybe of lining a couple areas with drop cloth plastic or garbage bags. Anyone else with a filter in the fender had water problems? Any ideas? Of course, I want cold air to be able to get in there freely, but not water. I was thinking of putting a little scoop beneath the filter, maybe through the bottom moulding, but how can I get lots of fresh air in and keep water out. Just looking for fresh ideas here..
Thanks
