Back firing means that the intake mixture has ignited while the intake valve is still open, causing the buring mixture to back up through the intake system. The turbo compressor would not be impressed.
Many refer to a non ignited fuel charge igniting when it hits the exhaust manifoldas back fireing. This would give the turbine a good kick.
If you have knocking, your ignition timing may need further retardation.
You may have deposits in the combustion chamber that are hot spots that can lead to knocking. Or dirty fuel injectors which are causing one or more cylinders to lean out under high delivery demands. You can try Techron Concentrate to deal with both issues. Perhaps going to far in enrichment can cause combustion chamber deposits which in them selves increase the octane requirements.
Anything that you can do to lower restrictions in the exhaust or intake will translate into lower air charge tempertures. Air filter in good shape?
If you can dupicate this knocking when in cool or cold tempertures, then this would inticate a proble that cannot be cured with a new intercooler.
Any sign that the heat range of the plugs is running too hot? All plugs look the same? If not, consider causes of uneven fueling.
Fuel pressure, pump, filter...
