...assuming you don't sidestep the clutch or something, isn't there little risk of tranny damage under those conditions? The actual load on the transmission is lighter than under actual acceleration because the tires are spinning. I always thought the only way to really do harm was to crunch the synchros (which isn't an issue here since you're not shifting) or shock-load the transmission by dropping the clutch. Not that it's something I'd want to try myself, but wouldn't reving to 6000, slipping the clutch for a moment, and spinning the tires wildly be less harmful to the transmission than actually accelerating to redline with traction? (Harder on clutch, obviously.) If not, why?
