if I were to do it again, with the knowledge that I have now, I would look to one of the Swedish
tuners.
Sully's comments are valid. Abbott supplies a new wastegate actuator that has a higher spring
pressure that effectively raises the base boost. The base boost is the lower-limit of boost that
the ECU can control. A stock system's base boost is around 6 psi. With the Abbott actuator,
my base boost is about 10-11 psi. While the Abbott programed ECU supplies more fuel and
alters the timing map to reduce the possibility that detonation (knock) will occur, with certain conditions
the motor can detonate. When the Trionic system senses knock it will change the timing to reduce
the knock. If reducing the timing doen't eliminate the knock, the ECU will try to open the wastegate
to reduce boost pressure. The ECU can not lower the boost any lower than the base boost setting.
Abbott does not even tell you that you really MUST use high octane fuel with their system.
Many of the Swedish tuners leave the base boost at stock levels and get similar power as that which
can be obtained with the Abbott system, while leaving the stock boost control system intact.
All that being said, the Abbott system does transform the power in the car. It makes a quick car
noticably quicker. It's really a blast to have so much power that you can break loose the wheels at 30-
40 mph in second.
My Aero has an automatic transmission, so stock it had 200 Hp at the crank and 217 ft-lbs of torque.
With the Abbott ECU and making about 18 PSI of boost, it measures 219 Hp at the wheels (equivalent to about 250 at the crank) and 258 ft-lbs torque on a DynoJet dynomometer.
Hope this helps with your decision.
