Aside from all the good points and loads of tech info posted already in this thread, IMO what would be really annoying about an auto is that...
1. Unless you have the new semi-auto tranny in the new m3's (i donno if the transmission is out yet, but there was an article about it in r&t), you won't get a very good launch with a turbocharged inline 4... they don't exactly have loads of torque under 2600 (or so) rpm.
2. Whenever you back off the gas it shifts up (obvious) and then when you punch it theres a little lag then a jolt from the kick down which may not bother everyone but i'm not a fan of it.
3. Its not as fun.
4. If you have a external dump valve, you won't hear the woosh when shifting, also again, might not bother all people, but i kinda like the overall sound of a car with a manual tranmission and a nice bov.
5. The cost. To make/modify an auto box to work well enough to not almost totally suck, would cost tons of money.
I'm not saying that its not possible, but IMO, it doesn't seem to be worth the hassle and the $$$. If you really want one, it might be something worth trying if you have your heart set on it, but i wouldn't expect it to be a popular choice for the majority of people, unless they lost a leg in a war or have a disease that prevents them from using a clutch.
Its an interesting idea though.
