164MPH, 157MPH both measured top speeds.... Posted by MTAERO [Email] (#2408) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MTAERO) on Fri, 22 Feb 2002 23:03:04 In Reply to: OK! We timed three consecutive miles at 22.0 seconds each, 5800 rpm on 95 Aero with abbott mods, this is actual 164 MPH. This event also managed to melt a piston, as this is a serious load on the engine with the tall gearing of the Aero. Temp 30 deg F, no wind in december 99.
Recently after changing final gear ratio to 4.05 we ran to redline in fifth gear and clocked max speed on a gps max speed indicator of 157 mph at 6200 rpm,(The newer Saab gearboxes with the 4.05 final drive now have a taller fifth gear installed .66 instead of my .70, I think changing to the new fifth gear would get top speed over 160 mph again) the 157 run was reached with an electronic boost controler that allows the turbo to be the only limiting factor at high rpm's if desired, under the heavy load of 150+ wind drag the tdo4 can hold 15psi to beyond 5800 rpm. Waiting for rev limitor to kick in at that speed is pretty tense. Temperature af this run was 37 deg F. at 3500 feet elevation.
Get a GPS device to help you calibrate any speed related devices you use including speedo, tach, data logger ect...
