9-3 braking

I took a drive in my mother's new Toyota Rav and to my amazement the brakes seemed far better than the 9-3's. I thought it was probably just an illusion cause by the softer suspension or the generaly lower speeds the Rav travels at ..but then I tried braking from 80km/h with both cars (pushing the clutch in) at a specific point on the road and sure enough the SUV stopped about 1/2 - 1 parked car before the Saab.
This is quite disturbing since I have also invested in upgrading the pads and rotors to Tarox ones and use good brake fluid. I tried again after warming the pads and tires up a bit -ABS seemed to really prevent the Saab from coming to a standstill- and the situation improved but was still short of the Rav!
BTW the tires have approx. 20k kilometers on them (rotated too) and the pads & rotors 15k. Is this poor low speed braking the trade off for fade-resistant pads? I am leaning to the sceanrio that the lower elasticity and higher pressure of low profile tires locks the wheels up at low speed.
What also impressed me was that the Rav requires just a gentle touch of the pedal, while the 9-3 has very long pedal travel before anything happens.
