it generally means the apc is doing its job. this means that it is more than likely 'hearing' predet and kicking back boost. it then allows boost to climb again until it 'hears' it again. you are describing the classic function of the apc.
why it is occuring? could be a number of things, all of the things that cause predet to occur. high intake air temps, timing too advanced, not enough fuel, or a combo of all three. things that may help to prevent predet from occuring may be making sure you have good plugs and wires and your engine is otherwise in good running condition. make sure all vacuum lines are in good shape. you might want to check w/spg9 about their chip. did they just crank up the boost and adjust the curves? or did they also make adjustments to the fueling and timing. if the boost was cranked without adjusting the other two, you would most definitely reach a point of predet. as far as fixes to adjust timing and get more fueling, you'll have to ask someone who knows di/apc. but definitely find out what was done before going further, otherwise you'll end up chasing your tail.
hope this helps.
