I have driven a nascar in driving school, and i was somewhat unimpressed. It had a governor, so it maxed out at 139. I've gone 137 in my saab, so no big whup.
I got to wondering how great these nascars that so many people seem to love really are.
Looking at the average speeds of a nascar race is underwhelming. For example, jeff gordon won the brickyard 400 with an average speed of 131.932 MPH in 1994 ( similar times here for comparison ).
NASCARS sometimes do hit very high speeds, qualifying at 180MPH, for example, but they get ~6MPG even during a regular race.
Saab's record for a 500 mile race in a 2.0T is 143.852MPH. This is for a street saab with the catalytic converter removed.

This seems to indacate that a street saab would be highly competitive in a nascar race. The top speed would be less, but i suppose the fuel stops would be much more spaced out.
Too bad NASCAR rules won't allow this, eh?
