The timing chain does not get added stress by adding more hp. The only think that would cause the timing chain to break (which would require head work at minimum). As Dave said, 16v engines push off very little stress onto the chain.
As far as the chain, I would pull the tensioner and check the length. I believe that either 7 or 11mm is the wear limit. On my old 88 9k with 200k or so, the timing chain guides are very worn, and should be replaced within the next 50k or so. The PO must have had the chain done, as it does no wear at all.
