After a long week of taking out the LH system, installing the new standalone ecu from EMS and getting the ignition to trigger properly and an afternoon of road tuning, my 99 is up and running beautifully.
I am blown away at the improvement over the stock ecu. I have gained lots of improvement over the entire power band. We tuned by driving and data logging. After that is was back to the shop to look over the data log and clean up any gaps in the fuel and ignition maps. Until the delta gate developed an exhaust leak it was very straight forward. I am very pleased with the results and look forward to tweaking the fuel maps even further.
I liked this system because of the Wide band/data logging cabilities and the fact that the distributor/tuner was very helpful and came highly recommended. The other advantage was that my brother lives about four miles from PTR. My son and I drove out from the coast, did the install at my brther's and then had the car towed into the shop for the final work on the harnes and distributor triggering. Kirk was not impressed with the strenght of the stock ignition so at his suggestion I added an MSD 6AL box to improve the performance the ignition.
Vince and Kooch have been saying it for a few years now, but it is amazing at the performance of a modern stand alone system. We have a six hour drive home tomorrow so I will have lots of oppurtunities to fine tune the fuel maps. If you are into the geek/tweaking game it is one hell of a rush to instal and get one of these systems up and running.
Now that Kooch (Wolf), Vince and others (SDS), Cutic (Haltech), Gary Moore (Autronic) and myself (EMS)have made the plunge, there are lots of maps and info out there to go this route. If you are starting from scratch, save your money and go with stand alone before you add all the do dads that do not have the flexibility and power of stand alone.
