The top fuelers use a direct drive and about 5 or 6 clutch disks. Then they basically "slip the clutch" the whole pass. As they go down the track they keep engaging the next disk until they are all engaged. They have to do a complete rebuild for every pass. I've watched them tear them down and can you say holy clutch dust, especially after only 1/4 mile. Cool stuff.
