Hey Saabers!
I want to share the progress so far on the B202 Adjustable Cam Gear project. We all know that Speedparts just released an adjustable cam gear for '94+ Saabs, but still no one in the aftermarket has supplied one for the B202 (classic 900 and 2-liter 9000's - basically any 16V before 1993) so I designed my own. Here's the update: the design is completed. The pilot run is completed. Reliability testing started this morning when I installed the gear in my SPG and drove to work! So far so good!
This gear is actually two stock gears machined to fit each other perfectly. In the gallery pic you can see the 360-tooth spline that provides full lockup at each setting. This is unlike all the popular (honda-toyota-nissan) aftermarket gears, which rely on screw tension (friction) to hold the parts together. That may be OK for a belt-driven cam outside the motor, but a chain-drive cam inside the motor is exposed to oil, intense heat cycles, increased vibration, etc. It may be overkill but for me the spline drive gives peace of mind!
So far I just put in one gear on the intake cam set at (conservative) +1 degree advanced. When I'm happy with the performance - say 500 miles and good visual inspection - I'll try different settings yet for more power. If they work and there is interest, I might make a production run later in the year. I have a couple '94+ gears so maybe I can make the same design work with that one too.
