I just went through this process. My nicely modified '96 900 SET was written off last winter so I bought a '01 Viggen thinking I would not have to do any modifying again. I was wrong, don't get me wrong, the Viggen was a blast but I still wanted more. So I sold the Viggen and purchased a '99 9-3 coupe. The '99 cost me a third of what the Viggen sold for. I have sourced a 2.3l to swap into my '99 which will get me close to the viggen numbers and with the T5 set-up it should be much easier/cheaper to grow from there. I am told 350 hp is not at all difficult to achieve. I am figuring I might spend $5000 CDN at most for this project plus the purchase price of the car. This is still about half of what the Viggen cost me.
On another note though, GM is right about the interior and the exterior, the Viggen is much better in those two areas. But a big part of my project is to end up with a "sleeper". From the outside my 9-3 will look just like any other one on the road.
