I guess it's all relative, in that nothing runs forever, but certain parts on Saabs do extremely well, especially the engine. With good maintenance, it's rare to need any engine work. Saab automatic transmissions have been problemmatic in the past, usually on higher-powered Saabs, but most Saab owners get standard transmissions, so as to maximize performance. You need to know a good Saab mechanic, as their systems are different from other cars, just as Volvos are different, etc., but there are less Saabs on the road, so mechanics tend to be less familiar. The bulletin boards here are a great resource.
Japanese cars usually do better with the piddly things that come up in the first 100,000 miles; perhaps they have better quality control over the minute details. Once much past 100,000, however, things do go wrong. I think it's more likely to drive a Saab past 200,000 than any Japanese make, including Honda. Subarus are complete junk, I think, and it's a wonder that they cost nearly as much as Saabs and people still pay it.
Safety is another consideration; despite public perception of Volvo being the safest, Saabs are even safer. Japanese cars are quite variable in this regard. And 4-wheel drive (Subaru) has nothing to do with safety.
Used Saabs can be a great deal, and I would recommend at late model 9000 or a 9-5. See these bulletin boards for more advice from owners of these models.
