Look at your current Saab 5 speed manual transmission. 1st is to get the car rolling easily so MA and Pops don't have to slip the clutch or kill the engine. Why is every Saab since 1986 stuck with this rediculously low first gear. There is a expression "active gears" in performance car talk. The Saab first gear is not considered active since it only is used to get the car rolling. That leaves four left.
Now look at fifth gear, since the change made in 1999, the jump from fourth to fifth is so far out of line it makes me sick every time I make the shift in my Viggen. So strike two gears. Now do the math 5 -2 =3 yes we're driving three speeds.
